Gary Alexander has trained a number of top horses in his 34-year career and hopes he has found another one in Champagne Haze, one of the leading fancies for Saturday’s R1m Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein. Alexander’s roll of honour includes Tommy Hotspur, Drum Star and Pierre Jourdan. Champagne Haze is a full brother to the latter. A year ago, Champagne Haze won the Ready-To-Run Cup to suggest his owners may have got a bargain in paying just R280,000 for the colt. With the four-year-old’s regular rider Andrew Fortune sidelined through injury, the jockey Alexander has turned to is his apprentice, Lyle Hewitson. "He knows the horse well and shouldn’t be troubled by the big occasion," said Alexander. Hewitson will be well aware there are a number of well-performing rivals in opposition notably Rabada, New Predator and St Tropez.
