Despite having to overcome a wide draw, Brett Crawford’s four-year-old, Rabada, has been priced up the 7-2 favourite for the R1m Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile to be run at Turffontein on November 5. Rabada races in the colours of leading owner Markus Jooste, who moved the horse from Michael Azzie to Crawford at the end of last season. Perhaps what has influenced bookies to price Rabada at the top of the market is the fact he has been in the care of Mike de Kock for the past two months. Second favourite is trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren’s Australian import New Predator, with Gavin Lerena booked for the ride in the 1,600m race. Many pundits are keen on the chance of Gary Alexander’s runner, Champagne Haze, who hit form this time last year when capturing the Ready-To-Run Cup.
