How coalitions are changing SA politics: opposition parties’ 100-day reports
The DA and other opposition parties say their coalitions in local government offer a way to defeat the ANC at national level
Having been in coalition government for 100 days‚ SA’s major opposition parties are confident coalitions could also work in the 2019 elections. Briefing the media on their first 100 days in office in the Johannesburg‚ Tshwane‚ and Nelson Mandela Bay metros plus other municipalities across the country‚ the parties said it was a case of "so far so good". Present at the briefing were the DA‚ the IFP‚ UDM‚ Freedom Front Plus‚ the ACDP and COPE. The EFF did not enter coalitions after the August 3 election‚ but agreed to co-operate. IFP chief whip Narend Singh said: "We are convinced we did the right thing for the right reasons." The party won six municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal outright and governs four more because of a coalition with the DA and the co-operation of the EFF.
