BUSINESS DAY TV: In what’s seen as a clear snub to President Jacob Zuma, union federation Cosatu has given its backing to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to be the next leader of the ANC. But will this make a difference to the leadership succession with Cosatu’s influence waning influence. Joining us on News Leader is independent political analyst Ebrahim Fakir. How much of a game changer is this? Does Cosatu have any influence within the party? Ebrahim Fakir: I believe it’s a bit early to start talking about game changes. The idea of a game changer is something that would come closer to the national general council of the ANC next year. An appropriate question is about the level of influence that Cosatu still enjoys. Not only have nine constituent unions left the federation, there is also now on the horizon the formation of a second federation ... which appears to be emerging out of the rump of Cosatu. There is clear organisational attrition. ...
