DA leader Mmusi Maimane has given National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete until close of business on Monday to respond positively to its request for a debate on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma — or the party will consider taking the issue to court. DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said at a media briefing on Monday that the DA had waited patiently for a response for 19 days and Mbete had no excuse not to have replied. He said he wrote to Mbete this morning asking her to respond today that the debate would be scheduled and say when this would happen. The DA would have to resort to court if the debate was not scheduled as there was no other recourse open to it after having exhausted all other avenues. The rules of parliament and several court judgments required that such motions had to be given due priority as they were important in that they provided oversight and accountability by parliament over the executive.
