The decision by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to lay charges of fraud against Pravin Gordhan is the beginning of the end for the finance minister. The NPA’s decision to lay charges of corruption against the finance minister is the beginning of the end for President Jacob Zuma. Which of these statements is true? I don’t know. All I know is that the battle between Zuma and Gordhan is heading towards a dangerous climax. Let’s pretend that the protagonists have not denied the existence of a battle between them, and that the battle has not divided us into two herds of uncritical cheerleaders. With that out of the way, let’s go back to the matter at hand. The decision to fire Zuma as deputy president of the country, which was followed by charges of corruption against him, sank former president Thabo Mbeki.
