Why a Constitutional Court ruling in an animal cruelty case is important for fighting corruption
08 December 2016 - 14:01
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has won the right to bring private prosecutions in animal cruelty cases. The organisation took the case all the way to the Constitutional Court‚ which agreed with its arguments in a judgment on Thursday. It also won costs against Justice Minister Michael Masutha and the national director of public prosecutions‚ both of whom opposed its application. The application stemmed from a 2010 case in which two camels were slaughtered during a religious ritual in Lenasia‚ south of Johannesburg.
