President Jacob Zuma and Co-operative Governance Minister Desmond van Rooyen approached the courts on Thursday in a last-minute attempt to prevent the release of the public protector’s state capture report. The president has been implicated in the investigation into complaints of an inappropriate relationship between the president, state officials and the Gupta family. It was scheduled to be released on Friday — together with a number of other reports — but it remained unclear whether Public Protector Thuli Madonsela would press ahead. Madonsela’s term of office ends on Saturday. On Thursday Zuma filed court papers seeking to delay the release of the report by at least two months. The president has asked for his application to be heard on Tuesday. Van Rooyen’s interdict application was scheduled to be heard on Friday, Madonsela said on Thursday night.
