Transparency and honesty key to changing view of used car sales
A new report in the UK shows that the reputation of the used car industry is still a problem
Used car dealers have had a bad rap, sometimes justifiably, although there are a vast number of good ones in the independent sector and at franchised dealerships. Research in the UK shows that only 7% of British consumers say they trust used car dealerships. That figure is contained in Auto Trader UK’s September Market Report. Comparing 13 major industries, the used car industry was ranked bottom by UK consumers for trust. Trusted 11% less than the finance sector and 4% less than real estate agents, the second lowest ranking industry for trust, the UK used car industry even ranks lower against new car manufacturing, which ranked fourth out of 13 industries, despite the emissions crisis. Some 5,000 consumers were surveyed and while only 7% said they trusted used car dealerships, among those who had bought a vehicle in the past six months, that figure was reversed, with only 7% claiming they did not trust the used car dealer or dealership.
