AIRPORTS Company SA (Acsa) is working with the Department of Home Affairs to phase in biometric processing stations and is ready to roll out an ambitious infrastructure plan to increase capacity on the strength of rising domestic and international passenger traffic.Acsa’s new aviation barometer, which gauges air traffic, shows that in the first quarter of 2016, passenger arrivals and departures rose 8.4% and 8.6% compared to the same period in 2015.In the second quarter of 2016, passenger arrivals spiked 4.6%. Passenger departures rose 5.8%.Acsa’s infrastructure plans hinge on it getting sign-off for a five-year draft tariff plan.Acsa CEO Bongani Maseko said the company had presented its infrastructure upgrade plans to a new regulating committee, making it aware of airports’ needs.Stakeholders in tourism including those in hospitality and airlines, would use the data generated from the aviation barometer to study travel patterns, said Maseko.Transport economist Joachim Vermooten sai...
