Geoff Budlender SC has been appointed to lead an investigation into allegations that an executive of Trillian Capital Partners had prior knowledge of President Jacob Zuma replacing Nhlanhla Nene with Des van Rooyen as finance minister. This was announced on Friday by Tokyo Sexwale‚ independent nonexecutive chairman of Trillian. The terms of reference for Budlender, instructed by Cheadle Thompson & Haysom, are to test the claims carried in a report in the Sunday Times‚ which also said the "Gupta-linked company" had "scored millions from state-owned companies for work it never did". Tillian has denied the Guptas had any shareholding or other interest in Trillian. However, Trillian is 60% owned by Salim Essa who owns 33% of Tegeta, the Gupta-owned holding company of Optimum Coal. Sexwale said Budlender has been asked to investigate the veracity of the information supplied by a whistle-blower‚ said to be a former employee of the company.
