Tough luck for economists. The news that Christine Lagarde is likely to be the next head of the European Central Bank means that neither of the top two jobs in the world of central banking will be held by trained economists.

Since November 2018, Jerome Powell has been at the helm of the US Federal Reserve. He is the first chair of the Fed not to hold a PhD in economics since 1987.
