THE bookies have probably got their sums right in quoting Abashiri as the odds-on favourite for the R2m SA Classic at Turffontein on Saturday.

Mike Azzie’s three-year-old could not have been more impressive when winning the Betting World Gauteng Guineas in February and the gelding is perfectly drawn in barrier four.

In early betting, Abashiri is quoted at 17-20 with Brazuca second favourite at 5-1, while Champagne Haze is at 15-2.

The fourth favourite, Liege, could put punters in the payout queue. There was a lot to like about this Dynasty colt’s recent win and he appeals as a good swinger bet with Abashiri.

With Anton Marcus in the irons, Brazuca will have his supporters, but the Aussie import has four lengths to find with the favourite on Guineas form.

Strictly on the formbook, Champagne Haze, trained at Turffontein by Gary Alexander, should have the measure of Brazuca.

Andrew Fortune is on the injured list, so Alexander will be delighted that Gavin Lerena has made the trip back from Hong Kong in time to take the ride.

The pick of the remainder should be domestically trained runner Romany Prince. Anthony Delpech will saddle up the son of Kahal for the first time.

The market on the Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Classic is more open with Marcus’s mount, Negroamaro, favourite at 18-10.

Many pundits feel the grey can turn it around with Fillies Guineas winner Heaps Of Fun, who sprang a surprise at odds of 20-1 in that race.

Although Heaps Of Fun will be trying 1,800m for the first time, Sean Tarry is of the opinion that the daughter of Visionaire will have no problem with the longer distance.

Craig Mayhew’s small Vaal stable has a rare big race runner in She’s A Dragon and the filly has an each-way chance from a favourable draw.

Muzi Yeni will have to overcome a wide draw on Frosty Friday and this gives She’s a Dragon a chance of beating Gavin van Zyl’s runner this time.

Earlier in the day, the first Highveld appearance of Tarry’s juvenile filly, Cloth Of Cloud, will be eagerly awaited in the second race on the card.

The daughter of Captain Al hacked up by six lengths on her debut at Kenilworth in January and she should prove too smart for another recent facile winner, Arissa.
