Adelaide — SA declared on 259/9 in the final session of the opening day of the day-night Third test against Australia on Friday. Faf du Plessis, captaining the Proteas despite being found guilty of ball-tampering on Tuesday, scored 118 not out, while Josh Hazlewood led Australia’s bowlers with 4/68. SA lead the three-match series 2-0 after dominant victories in Perth and Hobart, and Australia are fighting to avoid their first ever home Test series whitewash. Du Plessis shrugged off a hostile reception from the crowd at Adelaide Oval to steer a wobbly SA side to a position of strength. The visitors had ended the opening session on 89/3 and reached the dinner break on 165/7. SA’s declaration left the Australians facing a testing 45 minutes to stumps against the Proteas’ pace attack with the pink ball under lights. Australia ended the day on 14 without loss.
