Peter Bruce’s blind advocacy of the pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) cannot go unchallenged. Having conducted an extensive case study on what contributed to the failure of this venture as part of my doctoral thesis, I believe that simplistically attributing the collapse of the PBMR to "internal Eskom politics" is at best naive and at worst downright reckless. The South African taxpayer lost billions on the failed PBMR venture. There are extensive lessons our nation can extract from this setback. We would be happy to invite Bruce (pro bono) to our next training session, where we interrogate the PBMR as a project. Our hope is that this will better enable him to give the South African public a more informed, comprehensive and sound framework for analysis and consideration on the PBMR and other nuclear energy-related matters.
