I DISAGREE with John Stremlau that "Trump’s campaign has been a terrible advertisement for deliberative democracy" (US circus is a terrible advertisement for democracy, May 10).Donald Trump’s popularity is an indictment of US democracy, which represents a bipartisan oligarchy.President Barack Obama came to power preaching hope and change. After seven years in power, we know now it was more a salesman’s pitch than a substantive programme.Hillary Clinton is no better since she has not encountered a war proposal she has not effusively endorsed. Her dalliance with Goldman Sachs ensures that corporate control of politicians will continue if, heaven forbid, she occupies the White House.
