EDITORIAL: Public vs courts: decoding high-profile judgments
The misinterpretation of court rulings in Semenya and Zuma’s cases highlights the need for improved legal communication

When the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled in favour of Caster Semenya’s challenge against World Athletics last week, many rejoiced she had won her battle forcing her to undergo hormone treatment. When the Constitutional Court dismissed a challenge against a judgment that Jacob Zuma should return to prison to complete a prison sentence, many rejoiced he was being ordered back to prison.
The problem is neither such reading was correct. This seems to be an ongoing problem with judgments that relate to big public-interest matters. ..
