Everybody wants money, and there’s never enough. Who would have thought, just five years ago, that the winning campaign in the December 2017 ANC leadership race would have to raise and spend R500m?
At one stage there were seven contenders flying around the country, convoys of sedans and security in tow, local “organisers” with their hands out. If you wanted to win, you had to pay. That simple. It would have been enough to tighten even a Gupta’s sphincter...
