MNINAWA NTLOKO: Fikile Mbalula has to fight fires as Issa Hayatou pulls a fast one
The crafty and entrenched Confederation of African Football head Hayatou channels Trump in a bid to keep his office, writes Mninawa Ntloko
The eccentric president of the US, Donald Trump, may well have had crafty old fox Issa Hayatou in mind when he began ranting against fake news. Hayatou is as slippery as they come. He certainly does not owe his 29-year grip on the presidential seat of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to always doing things by the book. South Africans found out just how calculating the 70-year-old really is when he exploited what should have been an innocuous courtesy visit to President Jacob Zuma at his Mahlamba Ndlopfu residence in Pretoria last Saturday. Caf officials are in SA attending a variety of football-related activities. Hayatou, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula, Mamelodi Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe and South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan were part of a number of people who visited Mahlamba Ndlopfu.The visit would have quickly receded into distant memory by the end of the day, but the good folk at Caf had other ideas.
