A gigantic effort is at last under way to save the ANC. Party veterans, some Cabinet ministers, past ANC luminaries and progressive civil society lobby groups, the ANC chief whip and some of the parliamentary caucus, and some members of the ANC national executive have coalesced to remove President Jacob Zuma, or at least to set in motion processes that will lead to it. Their efforts have brought great optimism into our politics. It is horrible to spoil the party. But while these are the last days of Zuma, whose end is coming at some time, it is hard to see how the ANC can be saved. It is hugely significant that the national executive committee (NEC) and the ANC caucus, which only six months ago backed Zuma after the Constitutional Court found that he had broken his oath of office, have erupted into dissent.
