Eskom must be split to stop monopoly’s bid to switch off independent producers
With today’s edition of Business Day, you will find a special supplement on the renewable energy procurement programme. It is, quite simply, the most remarkable infrastructure programme yet seen in SA. The supplement provides details and photographs to really give a feel for the scale of it. Across the Northern Cape, there are carpets of photovoltaic cells covering hundreds of hectares. In the hills of the Eastern Cape, there are hundreds of wind turbines, towering 100m over the herds of cattle beneath. About R194bn, a third from foreign investors, has been spent to develop it. The programme has been lauded across the world and countries from Brazil to Saudi Arabia are emulating it. And this has been created in just five years.
