It’s a demoralising business. I had presumed that the thuggery around the #FeesMustFall movement was the work of a minority of agitators motivated by things such as their inability to make the grade. I was pretty sure that when they were finally heard, we’d find reason among the quieter voices. I was genuinely excited, because as one of the more fortunate people in SA, I do feel it is important to listen. So, it was disappointing to see the vandalism on show was no distraction from genuinely progressive ideas. When the Wits University Student Representative Council (SRC) released the "executive summary of the free education model" I read it with growing despair. It’s terribly weak. For starters, they don’t know the difference between percentages and percentage points, which, when you’re talking about billions you say should be taken from citizens, is more than a little bit important.
