With Donald Trump standing in the wings to assume leadership of the free world, the Iran deal has once again become the target of Republicans who are intent on scuppering it. Few people noticed that the signature background to the recently concluded deal between Iran and six global powers was posted as EU 3 + 3. Many referred to the talks as between the G5 + 1 — indicating they were between the five UN veto-wielding powers plus Germany — and Iran. The EU 3 + 3 is accurate. The UK, France and Germany effectively started negotiations with Iran around 2003. In the post 9/11 hubris, the US had shunned the opportunity of a global bargain with Iran and branded the country as part of the "axis of evil".
