Three veteran journalists and a political commentator, who were named in Independent Media’s "exposé" three months ago, are suing the newspaper group and its chairman, Iqbal Survé. Rhoda Kadalie, Terry Bell, Ed Herbst and Chris Whitfield lodged papers in the High Court in Cape Town on Wednesday against the company and editors of six of its daily titles. In the papers, the four claimed that they were each "defamed" by the article. The four applicants, in their court application, are claiming R500,000 in damages from the 13 defendants in the matter. The offending article, published in August, was titled "Exposé:The dirty tricks campaign against Independent", and placed under the byline of Independent’s "journalism intern investigative unit". It claimed that "white-owned" South African media had embarked on a crusade to slander Independent Media and Survé. Journalists "of a particular generation" were named in the article.
