Classes at the University of Cape Town remain suspended on Tuesday as talks continued, but the University of the Witwatersrand planned to try again to open, making fresh clashes likely. The talks at UCT — which began at the weekend — included meetings "with the students’ representative council and particularly the SRC candidates‚ who are leading the protest action on campus at present", UCT spokeswoman Gerda Kruger said. The aim of the talks is to explore "options and scenarios that will enable students to conclude the 2016 academic year successfully". Kruger reiterated that "private security company Vetus Schola remains withdrawn from the campus until further notice in the hope that this will enable us to have more positive engagements".
