The lobby group Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has urged the government to halt its nuclear energy programme until a blueprint for the country’s energy mix is updated and subjected to public input. The government would be "acting unconstitutionally and not in the best interest of the nation" if it continued pursuing new nuclear and coal projects in the absence of a transparent Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), said Outa chairman Wayne Duvenage. An uncertain electricity plan was detrimental to the country, Outa said a letter to the Minister of Energy, the Presidency, Treasury and the National Energy Regulator of SA on Monday. The Department of Energy is meant to update the IRP every two years, but the last version is dated 2010.
