The city of Johannesburg is considering reintroducing municipal courts to enforce by-laws, says mayor Herman Mashaba. His statement on Monday followed a four-day mayoral lekgotla that Mashaba convened last week, attended by the members of the mayoral committee, legislature leadership, outgoing city manager Trevor Fowler and incoming city manger Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni. Mashaba said city had identified 10 new priorities for his term of office. "We are looking at increasing the number of JMPD officers on the ground to focus on general safety but also by-law enforcement. One of the things I am excited about is the possible reintroduction of the municipal courts to enforce these by-laws," he said. Mashaba said investors in Joburg and residents should expect increased focus on the city’s CBD and the deployment of more metro cops on the ground.
