Airports Company SA (Acsa) on Friday unveiled the pilot for a new, less intrusive smart security system, aiming at reducing the time passengers spend in security checks while maintaining the highest level of global standards of detection. The new smart security system will go live at the international departures terminal of OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday and will incorporate carousels for luggage and full body scanners. OR Tambo GM Bongiwe Pityi says it is hoped the system will improve both passengers’ experience and operational efficiency. International best practice for waiting times for airport security was 10 minutes, although Acsa was targeting five minutes, which would be achievable with the new system, Pityi said at the unveiling on Friday. The system would mean the end of metal detectors, and passengers are unlikely to have to remove their laptops or undergo invasive body searches.
