THE South African Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed that its employee Kelly-Anne Elskie, girlfriend of suspended executive for business and individual taxes Jonas Makwakwa, has been suspended pending an investigation into alleged suspicious deposits into her bank account.SARS has appointed international law firm Hogan Lovells to investigate the matter. Makwakwa is alleged to have deposited R1.2m in various bank accounts, with R450,200 allegedly deposited into Elskie’s bank account.SARS head Tom Moyane received a report from a banking regulator in May, detailing the allegations against Makwakwa and Elskie, but acted against them only after the large cash deposits were reported in the media.On Sunday, Treasury’s spokeswoman Yolisa Tyantsi said Moyane had regular meetings with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan during which issues such as the suspensions could come up.However, she did not know whether Gordhan had been informed of Elskie’s suspension, Tyantsi said."Anything that affects...
