TSHWANE mayor Solly Msimanga is wielding the axe in the metro and will soon decide on how to purge a bloated staff complement, starting in his predecessor’s office in a bid to slash the municipality’s R6bn salary bill.Tshwane has some of the best-paid municipal officials on the country — its former city manager was paid more than the president.Former mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the ANC regional chairman in Tshwane, employed 915 in his office, some of them ANC branch members, according to the DA.Tshwane spends 33% of its operating budget on employee costs and forked out R6.1bn on salaries in 2014-15, its annual report for that financial year shows. The lowest-paid councillor earned R416,000 a year and the highest-paid took home R832,000 annually.
