FORMER Johannesburg mayor and South African Local Government Association chairman in Gauteng, Parks Tau, has called for e-tolls to be scrapped and urged municipalities to fight the user-pay system.Tau, who is also the ANC’s regional chairman in Johannesburg, on Thursday said: "The wealthy live closer to where their offices are and so they don’t always have to pay e-tolls. We [are] worried about the impact [of e-tolls] on the poor."The ANC has conceded that e-tolls contributed to the party’s electoral losses in Gauteng, where it lost control of Tshwane and Johannesburg.Tau was speaking on Thursday at a briefing after addressing delegates at a South African Local Government Association (Salga) conference, which marked the beginning of the new local government term and will set its agenda for the next five years.
