BUSISIWE Mkhwebane has emerged as the sole candidate to take over the public protector job from Thuli Madonsela in October.On Wednesday, Parliament’s ad hoc committee, tasked with choosing a candidate to succeed Madonsela, settled on the director of the Department of Home Affairs’ country information and co-operation management unit.This was done in the face of concerns raised during the interviewing process about her lack of legal experience. While she was among the youngest of the shortlisted candidates, and the least experienced in legal practice, Mkhwebane’s academic qualifications, track record as a director in a government department and a former senior investigator in the office of the public protector, ended up carrying the day for her.She will be recommended to the National Assembly, where her candidacy needs an ordinary majority vote.
