RETIRED KwaZulu-Natal estate agent Penny Sparrow is planning to challenge her R150,000 fine for hate speech.Sparrow briefly appeared before Scottburgh magistrate Vincent Hlatshwayo on a separate criminal charge of crimen injuria on Monday‚ also arising from a January Facebook post in which she referred to black people as "monkeys".Equality Court magistrate Irfaan Khalil said in June that the words posted by Sparrow on January 3 constituted hate speech and were a serious affront to human dignity and to black people in general. He ordered her to pay R150,000 to the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation within 60 days. She was also restrained from publishing any hate speech in the future.On Monday‚ Sparrow was represented by legal aid attorney Elaine MacDonald‚ who requested a postponement in the criminal case in order to consult her client and obtain further particulars.
