THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is pushing ahead with contested regulations barring some deductions from social grants, despite legal action by Net1 Applied Technologies and its associated companies.The regulations, promulgated in May, prohibit certain deductions from Sassa-branded bank accounts of social grant beneficiaries held with Grindrod Bank, into which social grants are paid. There have been widespread complaints by beneficiaries about unauthorised deductions for airtime, electricity and funeral policies.The agency gave notice on Sunday that direct deductions for funeral policies from child-support grants and temporary disability grants would be stopped in December 2016, and that alternative arrangements for the payment of premiums would have to be made.Adults receiving other grants will have to notify Sassa in person and in writing if they want to maintain the direct premium deductions for funeral policies from their grants.
