US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen’s upbeat comments to congress on Tuesday lifted stocks on Wednesday morning. Asian markets trading ahead of the JSE’s opening took their cue from Wall Street where Yellen’s remarks sent the Down Jones Industrial index up 0.45% to a fresh record 20,504 points. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 rebounded from Toshiba’s nuclear fallout on Tuesday, rising more than 1% at 6:30am Johannesburg time on Wednesday morning. Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 index was 0.93% higher. Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) said in a trading statement on February 6 that it expected to report on Wednesday that headline earnings per share (HEPS) for the year to end-December were between R6.25 and R7.60 from 41c in 2015. Basic earnings per share (EPS) were expected to swing from a loss of R46.38 to earnings of between R2.10 and R2.55.
