THE JSE started the week on an upbeat note on Monday as the higher oil price boosted sentiment, despite the Dow Jones retreating on Friday.The Brent crude price added 0.73% to $47.01 a barrel in early morning trade.Gold shares were in demand on a firmer gold price and some weakness in the rand. The gold price gained 0.49% to $1,341/oz.At 9.31am the all share was up 0.26% at 52,945.30 and the blue-chip top 40 added 0.30%. The gold index rose 0.84% and industrials added 0.33%. Resources firmed 0.27%. Platinums dropped 0.38%.The Dow Jones closed 0.20% lower, mainly on weaker retail and banking stocks.US data released on Friday indicated that retail sales in July were practically unchanged while producer prices unexpectedly declined over the same period, thereby potentially negatively affecting the US Federal Reserve’s 2% consumer inflation target.Asian markets were mixed in early morning trade on Monday.
