NEW vehicle sales reflected a disappointing 20.6% drop in the year to end-July 2016, according to figures from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa).Sales for new cars were 44,883 in July compared to 54,072 in July 2015.Of the total industry sales, 82.3% represented dealer sales, 13.1% were from the rental industry, 3% represented corporate fleet sales and 1.6% were sales to government, Naamsa said."Double-digit new vehicle price increases in response to earlier rand weakness, relatively high interest rates and fragile consumer and business confidence at a time of rising retrenchments across a number of sector, would put further downward pressure on sales of new motor vehicles," Naamsa said in a statement.Toyota was the best-selling car manufacturer, with 10,224 vehicles sold, followed by Volkswagen with 6,814 cars, Ford at 6,002 vehicles and GMSA/Isuzu at 3,499.
