IT LOOKS as though there will be a battle royale in the bakkie segment when the doors open for the Paris Motor Show in October. Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the first in-the-metal concept of its new bakkie, based on the platform of the new Nissan Navara but with all the typical Mercedes luxury we expect from the brand. The new model is expected to go on sale in 2017 in key markets around the world, including SA.However, Hyundai is also going to reveal the production ready version of the Santa Cruz bakkie that it revealed in concept form at last year’s Detroit Auto Show. What will be even more interesting is if Hyundai’s sister company, Kia, formally announces plans to create its own bakkie on the same platform.
