The International Booker Prize judges announced the 2024 shortlist on April 9. The prize celebrates fiction that has been translated into English, and 2024’s authors and translators represent Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden.

Eleanor Wachtel, the chair of the judging panel, said: “These books bear the weight of the past while at the same time engaging with current realities of racism and oppression, global violence and ecological disaster. Some seem altogether timeless in their careful and vivid accounts of the dynamics of family, love and heartbreak, trauma and grief.”..
