The number of international tourists visiting SA climbed 15.4% in the six months to June as the depreciation of the rand offered a value for money travel experience, SA Tourism CEO Sisa Ntshona said on Friday. About 5-million international tourists visited the country in this period, with significant growth being experienced in all markets, Ntshona told members of Parliament’s portfolio committee on tourism in a briefing on the organisation’s achievements so far in 2016. Particularly strong growth came from Asia and Australasia, Ntshona said. However, he noted that tourism growth in the country on a net basis lagged the global growth figures and merely represented a catch-up to SA’s position two years ago. There was a need to revamp marketing efforts to ensure that SA’s growth in tourism mirrored global growth.
