MTN has set a target of 9-million new subscribers by the end of the year, up from the previous 8.07-million, as early signs indicate a turnaround in the mobile network operator’s key markets. The greater number of new customers are expected to come from Ghana, Iran, Uganda and SA. In Nigeria, however, the group has lowered its forecast to 120,000 new subscribers by the end of December, from 800,000, largely as a result of changes in the way it accounts for active subscribers. MTN Nigeria has also faced a difficult operating environment in recent years as a result of economic conditions and changes to subscriber registration rules that have forced it to disconnect millions of subscribers. During the quarter to September, MTN Nigeria’s customer numbers grew 2.5% to 60.4-million, lifted by the reconnection of customers.
