GOVERNMENT departments and the private sector have improved co-operation in dealing the socioeconomic impact of mining on communities, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) heard on Wednesday.The private sector’s roles and responsibilities were clear, but often not clearly defined, the SAHRC’s national hearing on communities affected by mining was told. They ranged from issues of health to housing.The SAHRC is conducting two days of public hearings on the socioeconomic issues facing mining communities, ranging from water quality to the economic implications of the industry.
