The Competition Commission is engaging with the vehicle sector in a bid to open up the service and repair market, which is currently very exclusive. In a briefing to Parliament’s economic development committee on Tuesday, commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele said that while the commission had not yet launched an investigation into the vehicle sector, it was doing a lot of advocacy work. Meetings with the sector are scheduled for March 17 in a bid to resolve the industry-wide problem without having to prosecute individual cases. Thus far the commission had not found answers from the sector to justify the anticompetitive practices. The support of the Department of Trade and Industry, which has an incentive scheme for the motor industry is also being sought. These incentives could be used as an instrument to open up the sector, Bonakele said.
