To the five "forces" Martyn Davies examines in "Understand This" (On My Mind, July 29-August 4) should be added climate change and biodiversity loss.

Davies tangentially acknowledges the need for new battery technology and the scaling up of clean energy initiatives. But all extractive industries — including agriculture and especially coal, oil and timber — plus all nonrenewable power-generating systems face the prospect, and soon, of having to adapt radically to mitigate the above-mentioned "forces", and slow down and stop global temperature increases.

I fear many, starting with ExxonMobil, have barely begun to consider the options.
