Business and government leaders will meet at the Sandton Convention Centre on 8 April to discuss some of South Africa’s most pressing concerns – including economic growth, health care, education and skills development and global competitiveness.

This second annual Directors Event is held in partnership with the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies,  MMI Holdings, the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa and the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

A meeting moderated by Andile Khumalo will talk about innovation as a force behind entrepreneurial success. The panel is made up of The Awethu Project CEO Yusuf Randera-Rees; SiMODiSA MD Matsi Modise; Gauteng MEC of economic development Lebogang Maile; 4Di Capital partner Justin Stanford; and Wits Business School professor Boris Urban.

The cost of quality health care will be the focus of the second discussion. “Government can fund, regulate and shape the market of our health-care sector, but it cannot be expected to satisfy increasing demand on its own,” say the organisers. “Business can do its part to ensure that it remains equipped to maintain ageing and growing populations.”

The health-care discussion will be moderated by Bruce Whitfield, and will feature health director-general Malebona Precious Matsoso; Hlokomela Clinic director Christine du Preez;  Metropolitan Health CEO Dylan Garnett; Lenmed Health CEO Prakash Devchand; and Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa president Simon Hlungwani.

Developing the minds of South Africa’s youth is a key concern of the education roundtable, to be moderated by Iman Rappetti. The panel will discuss access to education and mentorship. Wits SRC secretary-general Fasiha Hassan; Wits School of Governance visiting professor Mary Metcalfe; Inclusive Education South Africa director Robyn Beere; Independent Institute of Education director Felicity Coughlan; and Western Cape education MEC Debbie Schäfer are on the panel.

South Africa’s global competitiveness will be the focus of the final discussion, featuring the lead economist and editor of the Africa Competitiveness Report for the World Economic Forum, Caroline Galvan; DTI innovation and technology director Nontombi Marule; PwC Southern Africa CEO Dion Shango; Smartrac MD Muhammad Seedat; and Richard Poplak, co-author of Continental Shift: A Journey through Africa’s Changing Fortunes. Bronwyn Nielsen will moderate the discussion.

The big take-out: The second Directors Event will bring together leaders from all spheres of society to discuss and find solutions to South Africa’s key challenges, including education, health care, economic growth and competitiveness. Book your tickets here.
