Finance minister Enoch Godongwana will deliver his national budget speech in Cape Town on February 23.

This speech comes at a difficult time for SA: the Covid-19 pandemic has put significant pressure on an already struggling economy, unemployment is rising, and the unrest last July brought into sharp focus the deepening fissures in society.

The FM, in partnership with the Paternoster Group and Citadel, hosted a webinar on February 16, during which experts discussed the hot-button issues likely to come out of the 2022/3 budget, and provided insights on SA’s economic outlook.

Moderated by FM editor Rob Rose and Richard Calland of the Paternoster Group, the panel included:

  • Michael Sachs, adjunct professor of economics at the University of the Witwatersrand;
  • Mamokete Lijane, fixed income sales and strategy at Absa Corporate & Investment Banking;
  • Gina Schoeman, MD, economist and head of CEEMEA Economics at Citibank SA; and
  • Maarten Ackerman, economist and advisory partner at Citadel.
