People familiar with the work of Hasan and Husain Essop may be surprised by one of the works in their new exhibition, Refuge (at the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg until August 19).
The method commonly employed by the twin artists is to create composite photographs in which they appear, sometimes as autobiographical subjects, sometimes as fictional "characters" in a momentarily frozen narrative.
