The fourth industrial revolution, or 4IR, accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, has seen technology transform the way organisations and their workforces operate — and it will continue to do so. Existing jobs may disappear, others will grow, and new job roles that don’t exist today will emerge.

The future of the workplace therefore demands new skills and ways of thinking. 

SA must reignite growth and job creation, and digitalisation could provide the economic boost we need. Change won’t wait for us: organisations, business leaders and educators need to be proactive in upskilling and retraining workforces to thrive within the new business landscape, and ensure people can coexist with new technology.

During the Business Day Focus 4.0 Digital Dialogue, a panel of experts explored what the drive towards digitalisation means for employment, skills and recruitment, and what your business’s workforce strategy for the future should be.

Hosted in partnership with Johannesburg Business School (JBS), Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and BCX, the virtual panel discussion was moderated by broadcast and financial journalist Alishia Seckam.

The panel included:

• Hope Lukoto, chief human resource officer at BCX;
• Tumi Nkosi, director of executive education at the JBS; and
• Ntokozo Majola, executive manager of Seda’s enterprise development division.
