It was about 6.30pm on Wednesday when I finally received the programme for the summit for a New Global Financing Pact. That was minutes after I’d checked into my €300-a-night Ibis hotel room, somewhere north of Montparnasse in Paris.

What a wonderful surprise: President Cyril Ramaphosa was addressing the summit. Along with 40 other heads of state from mainly African, South American and Caribbean countries. Perhaps my traumatic 12-hour journey from Carcassonne, in southwest France, would be worthwhile...
