Mamelodi Sundowns’ victory in the African Champions League final on Sunday could kick off a new era of success for South African clubs on the continental scene. The country built up to this moment after Orlando Pirates reached the final of the Champions League in 2013 and the Confederation Cup last year. Sundowns’ success of three finals appearances in three years came after South African clubs had none in the previous 12 seasons of continental competition.
